Suzanne Johnson

President, Green River College

Suzanne Johnson was born in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Long Island, New York with her family as she approached junior high.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ithaca College and then earned her masters and developmental psychology from Stony Brook University.  Suzanne’s research initially focused on attachment relationships (family functioning and child outcomes) and eventually shifted to focusing on the dynamics of relationships among lesbian and gay couples with children.  Her work has been published and presented in academic journals and conferences, including the Society for Research in Child Development and the American Psychological Association.  She and her wife have co-authored 2 books on parenting and Suzanne has published widely on the topic.

Suzanne spent over 20 years as a full-time faculty member in psychology.  She ultimately decided that she could have an even greater impact upon students by undertaking an administrative role and became Dean of the College at Dowling College in New York.  From there she made the intentional shift to community colleges and served as Interim Campus President at Sylvania campus of Portland Community College and, most recently, the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Suffolk County Community College, the largest community college in the New York State system.  Suzanne is both excited and humbled to be serving in the role of President at Green River College.  She is looking forward to working with the excellent faculty and staff here to build upon the success of Green River and to forge meaningful and supportive relationships with the diverse communities in our area which we are here to serve.
